Lee Jong-seok's Villa

이종석별장

A villa built around 1900 by Lee Jong-seok, a wealthy merchant who made his fortune trading salted seafood at Mapo River during the late Joseon era. Designated as Seoul Folk Cultural Heritage, the ㄱ-shaped main building features a central hall (daecheong) flanked by a raised wooden pavilion (numaru) on the right and the inner room on the left, beautifully showcasing late Joseon villa architecture alongside its servants' quarters. Behind the house, pine and fir trees form a gentle forested hill, while the inner courtyard is adorned with a well-kept garden; a serene space where you can feel the refined taste of Joseon-era aristocratic living in the heart of the city.

Highlights

  • Seongbuk-dong villa of rich late Joseon merchant Lee Jong-seok
  • L-shaped hanok with a numaru pavilion; pines and firs behind
