성균관
Seonggyungwan, established in 1398 (7th year of King Taejo), was the Joseon Dynasty's foremost national academy, inheriting the tradition of the Goryeo Dynasty's Gukjagam. It served as the center of Confucian education and the ritual veneration of Confucius. The Daeseongjeon (National Treasure) enshrines spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages, while Myeongnyundang was the lecture hall where scholars studied. The Seokjeon Daeje ceremony, held each spring (lunar February) and autumn (lunar August), is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage that faithfully recreates Joseon-era Confucian rites. The serene grounds lined with ancient ginkgo trees transport visitors back in time to the Joseon Dynasty amid modern Seoul. Located within Sungkyunkwan University's Humanities Campus, it pairs well with a campus stroll. Combined with nearby Bukchon Hanok Village and Changgyeonggung Palace, visitors can explore Joseon-era education, royal, and residential culture in one trip. ※ Access: 10-min walk from Hyehwa Station (Line 4) Exit 4
