명동성당
Myeongdong Cathedral, completed in 1898, is Korea's first brick Gothic-style cathedral and a symbol of Korean Catholicism. The striking red brick building stands prominently on a hill overlooking the bustling Myeongdong shopping district, making it one of Seoul's most iconic landmarks. As a sacred site honoring martyrs from the late Joseon Dynasty's Catholic persecutions, the underground chapel houses the remains of some of Korea's 103 Catholic saints. During the 1980s democratization movement, the cathedral served as a refuge for protesters, cementing its place in modern Korean history. The interior features beautiful stained glass windows and soaring Gothic arches that create a reverent yet stunning atmosphere. The cathedral is particularly impressive at night when illuminated, creating a striking contrast against Myeongdong's neon lights. ※ Access: 10-min walk from Myeongdong Station (Line 4) Exit 8, or 8-min walk from Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2) Exit 5
