Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

수원화성

A late Joseon Dynasty fortress built in 1796 by King Jeongjo in honor of his tragically deceased father, Crown Prince Sado. With 48 structures along its 5.74km walls, it represents the pinnacle of Eastern and Western fortification techniques and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Thanks to the detailed construction records in 'Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe,' it was restored close to its original form, an exceptional case for World Heritage recognition. Visitors can admire the four main gates (Janganmun, Paldalmun, Changnyongmun, Hwaseomun), the scenic Hwahongmun watergate, and the elegant Banghwasuryujeong pavilion. Traditional archery experiences and Hwaseong Trolley tours are also available.
