봉은사
Bongeunsa is a 1,230-year-old Buddhist temple founded in 794 CE by National Preceptor Yeonhoe, serving as an urban oasis tucked behind COEX in the heart of Gangnam. During the Joseon Dynasty's Buddhist suppression, it became a center of Buddhist revival through Monk Bowoo's efforts, and the temple grounds, where COEX now stands, hosted the national monk examination that produced renowned masters like Seosan and Samyeong. The temple grounds feature the 23-meter Maitreya Buddha statue, creating a striking contrast against Gangnam's modern skyline. The signboard of Panjeon Hall displays the final calligraphy of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, who perfected his distinctive Chusa style while residing here in his later years, a must-visit for calligraphy enthusiasts. Every Thursday, Temple Life programs are offered for foreigners, along with overnight Templestay experiences, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Korean Buddhist practice. Opening at 3 AM, it offers the rare opportunity to participate in pre-dawn prayers in the heart of the city. ※ Access: 150m from Bongeunsa Station (Line 9) Exit 1
